Most of the time when I do yoga, I listen to loud music. Guess what? When I teach yoga I play loud music. Shoot me. It is what it is. I’ve been through many yoga trainings and I’ve taught 1000’s of yoga classes. I sometimes hear, “That’s not yoga music!” or “real yoga doesn’t need music, it’s distracting.”Ummmmm… I call B.S.Seems like everywhere you look someone is trying to say what yoga IS or what yoga ISNT. You have to wear the right yoga clothes, and have the right yoga gear, and drink green juice, and use essential oils, and…of course you know Sanskrit, right?Duuuuuuude….I don’t care about all that. Is that all good stuff? Sure. However, I promise the yoga police are not coming if you break the “rules”. Why don’t we all take a big inhale through the nose and exhale through our mouth (see what I just did there? That’s also yoga)…then put away all the stereotypes, expectations, yoga theory books, the perfect Instagram poses, and ask ourselves what is yoga really? What do you think yoga is??Is it just stretching? Is it an exercise? Is it active recovery? Is it a spiritual practice? Is it a social event? Is it something to do because everyone else seems to be doing it?I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time defining most things in my life (example: what exactly am I? Coach Shannon…the _______ coach???), and I’m not about to let anyone define my yoga style/practice for me. Maybe it is just stretching…awesome, that’s good for you.Maybe it is an exercise…awesome, that’s good for you.Maybe it is active recovery…awesome, that’s good for you.Maybe it will increase your mobility/range of motion…ummmm, flipping fantastic!!Maybe it is….are you catching what I’m throwing here? YOGA IS FREAKING GOOD FOR YOU!!!Yoga doesn’t care if you aren’t flexible, or aren’t zen, or if you love meat, or if you….are a CrossFitterI do yoga because it makes me feel damn good. I teach yoga because I know it will make you feel damn good. Period. And you know what? New agey music doesn’t make a yoga practice any easier or more pure than Kanye. So, if you step into the gym, and you hear Post Malone or Khalid (or let’s go old school: Biggie or Dr Dre) on full blast, and you see a group of people doing some crazy stuff, just do me a favor, roll out your mat and join us. Seriously, give it a try.You might find that you like it. *gasp* I’m actually willing to bet you’ll love it. *GASP* Are you ready? (Hint: your answer is yes) Would you like a link to try your first yoga class free? (Again, your answer should be yes) Well, let me know! shannon@liveactive563.com
